Introduction to Cumucore

CUMUCORE’s Packet Core includes 4G EPC and 5GC NSA and SA functionality. The mobile core is designed using microservices for each of the functions required for 5G architecture. The system can be deployed in bare metal or virtualized platforms e.g. OpenStack, Kubernetes, etc. The design is focused on flexibility, cost reduction and efficiency leveraging the advantages of network function virtualization (NFV). The packet core can be deployed rapidly with small footprint computing resources for rough environments. The 4G EPC consists of 3GPP compliant Mobility Management Entity (MME), Serving Gateway (S-GW) and PDN Gateway (P-GW) network nodes and custom Home Subscriber Server (HSS). The EPC is compliant with 3GPP Rel13 NB-IOT and supports Cellular optimized IoT (CIoT) with SCEF module to deliver sensor data to application processing.

The EPC also includes eMBMS with BM-SC, MBMS-GW. In 3GPP Rel16 xMB interface has been included to simplify the access to eMBMS system functionalities. This enables content providers and broadcasters to establish media broadcast service through the standardized xMB (broadcasting application programming) interface.

5GC includes all the required functionality for interoperability with 3GPP Rel 16 RAN from different vendors. The current release of Cumucore 5GC includes the network functions from Service Based Architecture required for supporting network slicing i.e. NSSF and discovery of Multi-Access Network platforms through the Network Repository Function (NRF).
